Cookie Policy
This page explains the cookies and similar local storage used on storyshelvesspryg.courses, how they are grouped, and how to control them.
1. What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file placed on your device by a website. Similar technologies, including browser local storage, do the same job by different means. This policy covers both. Cookies can be set by us (first party) or by a provider acting on our behalf (third party), and they can last only for the browsing session or persist between visits.
2. How consent works here
Strictly necessary storage is used without consent, because the site cannot function without it. Everything else — analytics and functional categories — is only used if you allow it through the banner. The banner appears on your first visit and whenever your stored choice has been cleared. Use the "Preferences" button to open the category panel, set each category, and save. "Reject Non-Essential" declines everything except the strictly necessary items.
3. Categories in use
| Name | Category | Purpose | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| ssc-cookie-choice | Strictly necessary | Records the cookie choice you made so the banner is not shown again on every page. Stored in browser local storage. | Until you clear site data |
| Session and security storage | Strictly necessary | Set by the hosting platform to serve pages, balance load and protect against abusive traffic. | Session, or short-lived |
| Analytics measurement | Analytics — consent required | Counts page views, entry pages and referring sites so we can see which notebooks are read. Enabled only if you allow the analytics category; if enabled, a third-party measurement provider sets first-party cookies on this domain. | Up to 13 months |
| Display preference storage | Functional — consent required | Remembers display choices, such as a dismissed notice, so they are not repeated on every page. | Up to 12 months |
If the analytics category is enabled, the data it produces is aggregated and used for editorial planning only. It is not used for advertising, profiling or resale.
4. Changing your mind
Your choice is stored in your browser, so it applies per browser and per device. To change it, clear this site's cookies and local storage in your browser settings, then reload any page: the banner will appear again and you can set a new preference. You can also email [email protected] if you need help.
5. Browser controls and opt-out
Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies, and most let you block third-party cookies specifically. Blocking strictly necessary storage may leave the banner reappearing on each page load, but the pages themselves will still work.
- Google Chrome: Settings, then Privacy and security, then Third-party cookies and Delete browsing data.
- Mozilla Firefox: Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Cookies and Site Data, including Enhanced Tracking Protection.
- Apple Safari: Settings or Preferences, then Privacy, then Manage Website Data and Prevent cross-site tracking.
- Microsoft Edge: Settings, then Cookies and site permissions, then Manage and delete cookies and site data.
- Mobile browsers: the equivalent controls sit under the browser's own settings rather than the device settings.
Many browsers also offer a private or incognito mode, which discards cookies and local storage when the window is closed.
6. Do Not Track and global privacy signals
There is no common standard for interpreting Do Not Track headers, so we do not rely on them. Where your browser sends a recognised global opt-out signal, we treat it as a refusal of the analytics and functional categories.
7. Third-party providers
Hosting and content delivery are provided by a third party under contract, which is why some strictly necessary storage is set by that platform rather than by us. If the analytics category is enabled, an analytics provider processes the resulting data on our behalf under contract. These providers are not permitted to use the data for their own purposes.
8. Related policies and contact
How we handle personal data generally, including the rights available to you and how long enquiry correspondence is kept, is set out in our Privacy Policy. The rules for using the site are in our Terms of Service.
Questions about cookies can be sent to [email protected], or by post to Halyard Ridge Editorial Ltd, Unit 5, Cottrell Yard, 18 Marlpool Street, Redcliffe, Bristol BS1 6QN, United Kingdom.
9. Updates
We review this policy when the storage we use changes. The version published here is the one in force, and the table above is amended whenever a category or provider changes.
